ObTape Lawsuit - What is ObTape?

What is ObTape Sling?

Introduced in 2003 by the Mentor Corporation, the ObTape bladder sling is a medical device also called transobturator tape which is inserted through surgery for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. ObTape bladder sling was used in around 36,000 women prior to its elimination from the medical device market in 2006. By providing extra support for the urethra, the ObTape sling decreased bladder leakage, an embarrassing condition that affects many females over 60. Although the Ob Tape sling was presented as a permanent solution, a large number of women have experienced debilitating complications associated with their ObTape treatment.

What are the Complications from the ObTape Sling?

Extensive research on the ObTape sling, performed by the Journal of Urology, show that the ObTape bladder sling is often rejected by the body, resulting in medical issues often more distressing than the original condition of stress urinary incontinence. A 2006 study showed that over 13% of ObTape recipients experienced the erosion of the sling through the vaginal walls. Other subjects developed vaginal discharge, as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Ironically, use of the ObTape sling can also result in reoccurrence of the initial problem of stress urinary incontinence. Originally, it was assumed that problems with ObTape sling stemmed from the mistakes of doctors. However, more recent findings show that the ObTape sling was inherently defective in design, due to is use of overly dense and non-woven material. While other varieties of vaginal slings allow for the absorption of oxygen and other nutrients by surrounding tissue, the ObTape sling simply does not, resulting in the excruciatingly painful rejection of the device by the body. The complications with the ObTape Sling and other transvaginal mesh devices have been documented by the FDA, and have been officially declared "not rare."

OB Tape Complications

Mesh erosion occurs in some patients who have undergone an ObTape Bladder Sling or vaginal mesh implantation. Mesh erosion is when part of the ObTape,Bladder sling or vaginal mesh implant erodes through the wall of the vagina which may cause severe pain or discomfort. Mesh erosion can also result in the excretion of blood and urine. Initially mesh erosion is typically treated with a cream prescribed by a doctor, but in many cases the cream will not fix the mesh complication. In many mesh erosion instances further surgery may be required to remove the mesh implant. Removal of the OBtape, bladder sling or transvaginal mesh implant may be successful in treating mesh erosion, but in some situation, even after multiple surgeries there may be persisting complications due to mesh erosion.
